Pete Russell will step back from his full-time role as chief executive of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the league announced on September 24.
Russell was part of the CPL’s original founding team. He will stay in post until a new CEO is appointed and will continue to support the board and leadership team. The CPL did not name a successor or give a timeline.
The announcement follows a season in which the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons won their first CPL title.
Expansion under Russell
According to the league, the group expanded to seven franchise teams in the last year. It also set up a production company, Live and Louder Productions, a linear TV channel, Rush Live and Louder, a streaming app and an events business.
“I believe its greatest achievement is in bringing fans back to cricket across the Caribbean and providing a platform for generations of young West Indian players to showcase their talent, express themselves on a global stage and pursue their cricketing dreams,” Russell said.
CPL owner and founding investor Denis O’Brien said Russell had “overseen its expansion into new areas including Media and Events over recent years” and would “remain involved as part of the wider group”.
Chairman Richard Bevan thanked Russell “for his leadership, commitment, and contribution during his tenure as CEO”.
