Amstelveen, 21 August 2026: India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 suffered a setback after defending champions Netherlands defeated them 2-0 in their opening second-stage Pool E match at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Friday.

Yibbi Jansen struck in the second minute before Frederique Matla doubled the Netherlands’ advantage in the 38th as the hosts secured all three points and confirmed their place in the semi-finals.

The defeat leaves India on one point in Pool E, carried forward from their first-stage draw against China. The Netherlands moved to six points after adding three to the three they had carried forward.

China, who drew with Australia earlier in the day, have two points, while Australia are level with India on one.

India must now beat Australia in their final Pool E match and also need the Netherlands to defeat China to progress to the semi-finals.

Netherlands strike inside two minutes

The Netherlands took just 81 seconds to open the scoring.

Applying a full press from the start, the Dutch quickly forced a penalty corner. Jansen made no mistake with the opportunity, firing past goalkeeper Bichu Devi to her left to make it 1-0.

The hosts continued to put India under pressure. Bichu produced an excellent left-foot save from another penalty corner in the fifth minute before denying Freeke Moes moments later.

India gradually settled into the contest and made their first circle entry in the ninth minute. Salima Tete had India’s first shot three minutes later, but her effort went over the post.

The Netherlands nearly doubled their lead in the 13th minute when a penalty-corner attempt struck the post.

India survived the scare and ended the opening quarter trailing by just one goal.

India create chances before half-time

Savita replaced Bichu in goal at the start of the second quarter and was immediately called into action.

India earned their first penalty corner in the 19th minute. Deepika’s flick struck the rusher’s foot, but the retake was blocked by a Dutch stick.

Navneet Kaur then went close in the 22nd minute after getting on the end of a pass inside the circle. Her effort, however, went narrowly over the crossbar.

The Netherlands continued to create chances at the other end. Savita made a series of important interventions, first denying Felice Albers and then standing firm during a goalmouth scramble.

Those saves kept India in the match as the Netherlands took a 1-0 lead into half-time.

Matla doubles Dutch advantage

The Netherlands increased the pressure after the break.

A penalty corner in the 33rd minute was superbly blocked by a rushing Salima. India then nearly found an equaliser on the counter-attack, but Sunelita’s push from inside the circle lacked the power to trouble the Dutch goalkeeper.

The second goal arrived in the 38th minute.

The Netherlands earned another penalty corner and Matla’s effort found its way past the Indian defence and the player stationed on the post to make it 2-0.

India entered the final quarter needing an early goal to bring themselves back into the contest, but the Netherlands continued to control the tempo.

Freeke Moes struck the post in the 54th minute, while Savita made another important save two minutes later to prevent a third Dutch goal.

Navneet denied as Netherlands close out win

India pushed forward in the closing stages and Navneet came closest to reducing the deficit in the 59th minute.

Goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal made a brave save, taking a blow to her helmet while keeping India out.

The Netherlands earned one final penalty corner in the closing seconds, but Ishika made the save on the post.

The defending champions comfortably saw out the remaining moments to complete a 2-0 victory and seal their semi-final place.

India now face a must-win match against Australia and will also need the Netherlands to beat China to keep their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 semi-final hopes alive.
