Amstelveen: India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 were left hanging by a thread after a 1-3 defeat to co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 in Amstelveen on Saturday.
The victory took the Netherlands to six points at the top of Pool E. They added three points to the three they carried forward from the first stage, while India remain without a point.
India next face Argentina, who are also yet to open their account. England, currently on three points, take on Argentina later on Saturday. An England victory would end India’s mathematical chances of reaching the semi-finals.
After more than two goalless quarters, Duco Telgenkamp broke the deadlock for the Netherlands in the 41st minute. Tjep Hoedemakers doubled the lead in the 51st before Harmanpreet Singh pulled one back from a penalty corner.
Any hopes of an Indian comeback were quickly ended as Thijs van Dam scored four minutes later to seal a 3-1 victory for the hosts.
India start brightly but miss first-half chances
India began with an aggressive full press and made a couple of early circle entries as both teams moved the ball quickly in an energetic opening quarter.
India came close to creating a clear opportunity in the 10th minute when Dilpreet Singh received the ball inside the Dutch circle. He held on to possession slightly too long, however, and the chance disappeared.
A minute later, Floris Wortelboer registered the first shot on goal, although it did not trouble India.
The Netherlands earned their first penalty corner in the 13th minute. Sumit charged out well to block Jip Janssen’s flick before Sanjay completed the clearance.
The opening quarter ended 0-0 after a closely contested 15 minutes.
The Netherlands began to enjoy more possession in the second quarter and increased the pressure on the Indian defence. They won another penalty corner in the 16th minute, but Manpreet Singh made two important blocks to deny Janssen.
India defended several spells inside their circle effectively and had their best opening of the first half in the 23rd minute.
Dilpreet found himself with a good opportunity but rushed his effort, allowing the Dutch goalkeeper to pad the ball away. Rajinder Singh reached the rebound first but could not keep possession.
The Netherlands threatened again in the 28th minute after finding space to the right of the Indian goal. The angle was too tight, though, and India cleared the danger.
The teams went into half-time locked at 0-0, with India still waiting for their first penalty corner.
Harmanpreet denied as Netherlands break deadlock
India finally won their first penalty corner in the 35th minute after a successful video referral overturned a long-corner decision.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh came on for the drag-flick, but the Dutch rushers blocked his attempt. India referred again, believing the ball had struck a foot, and retained the penalty corner. Harmanpreet’s second effort went wide.
The Netherlands eventually found the breakthrough in the 41st minute.
A defensive miscommunication created space for the hosts and Telgenkamp took advantage, putting his side 1-0 ahead and bringing the packed Wagener Stadium to life.
India responded immediately by earning another penalty corner, but Harmanpreet was again stopped by the Dutch rushers.
The Netherlands carried their 1-0 advantage into the final quarter.
Netherlands strike twice to seal 3-1 win
India continued to push forward and earned another penalty corner in the 47th minute following a well-worked move started by Sanjay.
Amit Rohidas took the direct hit, but his effort was saved near the post. A subsequent referral brought India another penalty corner.
Harmanpreet’s flick looked goal-bound, only for Netherlands goalkeeper Derk Meijer to make an excellent save and palm the ball over.
The Dutch doubled their lead in the 51st minute. Koen Bijen sent a precise ball in from the right and Hoedemakers produced the decisive touch in front of goal to beat Mohith HS.
India refused to let the game slip away and soon earned another penalty corner. Harmanpreet’s initial attempt was blocked, but the ball struck a foot and India were awarded another PC.
This time, the Indian captain converted, beating Meijer to his right to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The Netherlands responded four minutes later after another Indian mistake.
Manpreet was dispossessed in midfield and the Dutch immediately launched a counter-attack. Van Dam finished the move with a composed volley past Mohith to restore the Netherlands’ two-goal cushion.
India pushed forward in search of another response, but the hosts held their defensive shape and controlled the closing stages.
A late misplaced pass from Shilanand Lakra threatened to offer the Netherlands another opening, although a foul just outside the Indian circle brought the attack to an end.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 win for the Netherlands and secured their place in the semi-finals. India must now beat Argentina and depend heavily on the remaining Pool E results to keep their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign alive.
