Lot of expectations lie on Virat Kohli's shoulders as he takes over the reign from Mahendra Singh Dhoni

virat kohli indian cricketerOver the past few years, the Indian team has been on a rampant run particularly in Tests, extending their unbeaten streak to a record 18 games. Although much of the success can be attributed to the exploits of Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli, a lot boils down to the change of batons at the helm.

Virat taking over the reign from Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MSD) in the longest format of the game had paid off huge dividends for the side as they staked their claim at the top of the test ladder was stunning performances to go with the aggressive and highly effective captaincy of the star batsman from Delhi. He has ensured that the team never settled for a draw and through high scoring rates, was always able to bring in the concept of winning games into the equation. The aggressive form which Pujara undertook during the bygone year was highly lauded and the man behind this change is none other than Virat Kohli. Likewise, he has ensured the team always stays ahead of the game and it has produced highly effective results.

On a personal note, Virat has enjoyed a lot of success with the bat featuring in the top 3 across all formats and amassing multitude of records along the way. He also went on to become the first player to breach the 900 run barrier in the 2016 edition of the IPL. With a rich vein of form and things going his way across all circles, we are sure to be treated to another glorious year full of record breaking stints and success for the Indian Team.

Recently, with MS Dhoni relinquishing his captaincy as a result of which Virat was named the captain for all three formats, a lot of expectations lay on the shoulders of the young man who is widely touted to bring laurels to the team across all formats following a lean run of form in the shorter versions of the game. It will also be interesting to see how Virat handles the senior players in the team, considering the fact that the Test side does not feature any of the senior pros. It would also be interesting to see the way he uses MS Dhoni's exploits as a finisher down the order or as the Dhoni we knew early on who bludgeoned every line up at the top of the order. Only time will have answers to all these questions.
