Before the start of the 2011 Indian Open, not many people knew much about Chiragh Kumar. Chiragh, who has played most of his golf at the Delhi Golf Club, has emerged as the new hero of Indian golf after finishing second at the recently concluded Asian Tour event.

In an interview with Samikshan Dutta Choudhury of Indian Sports News, he speaks about his new-found fame, his plans and more.

ISN: Congratulations on finishing the Indian Open on a high. Before the tournament you were not well known on the Asian Tour, but now things have changed. How does it feel?

Chiragh: Thank you. I can’t explain how I feel right now. People were yelling out my name after every shot. The support of the home crowd felt really good. All I can say is that the feeling is awesome and I am enjoying it.

ISN: Did you expect to finish the Indian Open on such a high note?

Chiragh: Honestly, I never expected it. I just played well and I achieved it. So all’s well that ends well.

ISN: How would you sum up your season before the Indian Open?

Chiragh: I started off really well. I made the cut on some occasions but then could not keep up the consistency. So it was a mixed season for me, in which I was successful on some occasions and failed on others.

ISN: How do you see your career from now on?

Chiragh: I will take only positives from here. As a person, I do not think about the past too much. Everyone needs a start, and I guess this was mine. So I am really looking forward from here and hope to be on the leaderboard more often.

ISN: What has been your goal?

Chiragh: My primary goal was to secure my card for the next Asian Tour season, and I have done that by virtue of my second-place finish at the Indian Open. For now I will take two weeks off, and after that I will start playing in Asian Tour events.
