Since its introduction to international cricket, T20 has caught the imagination of cricket fans around the world, and its popularity has grown by leaps and bounds. People nowadays are more interested in the shortest version of the game than in Test cricket and ODIs.

This craze has led to many new domestic T20 leagues, and such ideas are always welcomed by the game’s governing body, the ICC, and by the cricket boards of different countries.

The rising popularity of T20 cricket has led to endless debate, and cricket pundits around the world see it as having a harmful effect on the other formats. Yet it has hardly hurt the game, and with every passing day the craze only seems to grow.

It may not be the most favoured format among former players, but the growing interest in T20 cricket in every nation shows that it is here to stay, no matter what.

Here are a few reasons why T20 cricket is such a huge hit.

An interesting format

The 20-over format has been very well received by the fans. Unlike the other two formats, which can become monotonous at times, a T20 game is always full of excitement. A match is wrapped up within four hours, and that has certainly gone down well with the fans.

Unpredictability

Even though some teams are fancied more than others, it is the unpredictable nature of the game that makes it so interesting. Unlike Tests or ODIs, in T20 cricket just a few overs can change the course of a match. A good run with the bat over a stretch of five overs, or two or three quick wickets, is enough for a team to win. Every team fancies its chances in this format, and as seen in the past, upsets are more likely.

An unconventional approach

T20 cricket has been a breeding ground for innovation, and every team tries to do something different to outplay its opponents. Be it opening the bowling with a spinner or innovative stroke-making, the format has pushed players and teams to think outside the box and try something new. It has seen the arrival of some of the best-known shots of modern cricket, such as scoops, switch-hits, slog sweeps and reverse sweeps.

The atmosphere

The atmosphere at a T20 match is electrifying. There is a carnival feel inside the stadium, with cheerleaders, pyrotechnics, fireworks and music.
