New Delhi: Delhi Amateur Wushu Association on Saturday commenced its prestigious 10thDelhi State Wushu Championship at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium. The three-day long championship (closing on 30 January 2012) was inaugurated by Desh Deepak Verma (IAS), DG Sports Authority of India and the function was presided over by V.P. Aggarwal, Chairman, Airport Authority of India.
Zhang Zhihong, Cultural Councillor, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China graced the occasion as the Special Guest of the event. The opening ceremony held today was started with an enthralling cultural programme presented by the children of various schools from Delhi and Laddakh, followed by breath-taking Wushu demonstrations by International Wushu players.
The tournament will witness over 500 Wushu players representing 20 teams from various clubs and departments of Delhi including CRPF, ITBP, Air Force, STC Delhi and Delhi Wushu Academy (Champion of 9th Delhi State Wushu Championship). The Delhi Wushu State Championship was started in the year 2001 and gained momentum and popularity under the able guidance of Dr. Prabhat Kumar (IAS), President, Delhi Amateur Wushu Association.
Congratulating the team, Desh Deepak Verma, (IAS), DG Sports Authority of India said, “It is an honour for me to be a part of the 10th Delhi State Wushu Championship and I am glad to see how Delhi Wushu Association is playing a pivotal role in promoting the sport in India. It is a matter of pride to learn that first-ever Arjuna Awardee for the Wushu sport is a player from Delhi. This is a great example of the dedication and hard work being done by the Delhi Amateur Wushu Association and I would like to mention Rajvir Singh’s name here who is the torch bearer”.
V. P. Agarwal, Chairman Airport Authority of India appreciated and encouraged all the players and thanked all volunteers of Delhi Amateur Wushu Association for organising the event.
