John Mooney narrates the story behind the scenes of Irish Cricket and their journey to the 2015 Cricket World Cup
Ireland’s cricketers have become the latest athletes from the Irish Sports Council’s High Performance Programme to feature in a digital series entitled ‘The Journey’. The focus on Irish cricket is the story behind the success of Ireland’s national team. Ireland are in a strong position to qualify for a third consecutive Cricket World Cup since their debut at the 2007 event in the Caribbean and currently sit on top of the qualifying table on the Road to Australia 2015.
Cricket Ireland’s Journey will be the second in a series of forthcoming Journey’s following the successful launch of Katie Taylor in December. The series aims to show the stories of the preparation that goes into peaking at the right time on a world stage.
“The Sports Council has a role to play in the promotion as well as the development of sport”, said a spokesperson for the Council. “We wanted to produce a professionally created body of work which athletes and sports can use to present themselves and their story to the world. The idea for the Journey is to highlight the daily commitment of high performance athletes. We see sport in the spotlight when it comes to the big occasion but this is about how people get to that point.”
“We trialled the concept last year with Katie Taylor, and are delighted to be following that up now with the story of Ireland’s cricketers who have experienced remarkable success in recent years and continue to do so now on their Journey to the 2015 World Cup in Australia where they currently top the qualification table”
Ireland’s John Mooney is one of several Ireland players to feature in the series and provides the stirring voice-over for the feature piece in the series. John who is a former apprentice electrician, is now contracted full-time with Cricket Ireland and he spoke of his pride in representing his country. “For me to be a full-time professional cricketer playing for Ireland is a dream come true and something I thought might never be possible.” John went from an amateur cricketer at the 2007 World Cup to a professional cricketer at the 2011 World Cup where he hit the winning runs over England in Ireland’s famous 3 wicket-win.
Speaking about The Journey, “It was great to be given the opportunity to feature in the series, we had seen the footage with Katie Taylor and knew that there was going to be some great quality photos and videos come from it.” He continued by speaking about how it will give another boost to cricket in Ireland ahead of a packed schedule in 2013. “ I’m sure this project will give yet another boost to Cricket’s profile here ahead of what is a huge summer for us with Pakistan and England coming to Dublin, and the opportunity for us to seal our place in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.”
