Punjab Police stuns ICF

Chennai: Punjab Police (Chandigarh) scripted a comprehensive 72-40 win over ICF in a men's Pool ‘A' contest of the third annual all-India basketball tournament for the Jeppiaar Trophy at the JJ Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

The result helped Punjab Police keep alive its chance of qualifying for the semifinals.

After losing to Sathyabama University in its first match, Police desperately needed a victory and achieved it without much ado. Trailing 10-19 in the first quarter, ICF put up a modicum of fight in the second quarter by reducing the margin considerably.

Even in the early part of the third quarter, ICF came up with a few good steals and defensive rebounds.

Police, however, ran away with the match in the second half of the third quarter as well as the entire fourth quarter.

Amrit Pal Singh (29 points) and Amjot Singh (12) were the main scorers for Police.

Sathyabama, which has been the most impressive team so far, did its reputation no harm with an authoritative 78-45 win over Rail Coach Factory (Kapurtala), its third successive victory in Pool ‘A'.
