Rizvi College Mumbai to represent India in the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Series Championship

Mumbai: Two of India’s best college cricket teams clashed against each other amidst the unpredictable weather of Chandigarh, this evening. Mumbai’s Rizvi College and Pune’s MMCC played one of the best most gripping matches of the tournament and proved their stand in the national finals. After a well-played match between the boys who represented the west zone in the tournament, Rizvi College, Mumbai emerged victorious and are now titled the India champions of Red Bull Campus Cricket 2014.

The day began on a good note for the boys from Mumbai who won the toss and chose to field. In the first innings, Pune set a target of 122 for Mumbai to chase. Tushar Shrivastav was the highest scorer with 33 runs off 25 balls and three 4s. Ankush Jaiswal of Rizvi however, stole the show in the first innings by taking 2 wickets.

The second innings had a spectacular start with Mumbai’s opening batsman Sumit Ghadigoankar hitting four 4s, four 6s and scoring a total of 55 runs before leaving the field. He was declared the man of the match and his consistent performance throughout the national series, also won him the man of the tournament.

After losing just 2 wickets in the first two overs, the Mumbai team stood strong till the 12th over. The loss of two wickets soon after, didn’t deter the confidence of the boys from Rizvi College. They chased the total of 122 in just 15.4 with a run-rate of 7.91 and celebrated their victory on the field.

Team Mumbai further proved their mettle in the tournament with Kevin Almeira, captain of Rizvi College, Mumbai being declared as the best batsman and Pankaj Jaiswal as the best fielder of the national series. Gurinder Singh from DAV College, Chandigarh was recognized as the best bowler of the tournament.

Rizvi College, Mumbai will now compete with teams from other countries in the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Series Championship in the United Kingdom in the month of July 2014.

Red Bull Campus Cricket gives young cricketers a chance to discover and maximize their potential and connect with their inner heroes. In its first year, Red Bull Campus Cricket brought together three of Asia’s largest cricketing nations (India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan) and put them to test. Campus cricketers from the sub-continent battled it out for the title of Asia's best campus cricket team.

The Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals this year will see a monumental clash of some of the best college-level talent coming from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia, West Indies, South Africa and England.
