Kolkata: A keen battle for honours is on the cards as a star-studded field is lined up for the RCGC Juniors Cup, an event on the Tata Steel IGU East Zone Junior Tour which tees off at the historic Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Wednesday. The two-day event will see approximately 60 talented kids vying for honours in five age-group categories.
Gurkirat Singh and Raghu Bir Choudhary with two victories apiece begin as firm favourites in the top category (A&B) of the seventh leg of the 9-leg Tata Steel IGU East Zone series. In contention will also be Viraj Khanna who recently scripted a brilliant comeback victory to capture the Jamshedpur Juniors Cup and is fresh from his victory along with Sunit Chowrasia who also has a victory to his credit.
The Royal Calcutta Golf Club which is considered to be the Mecca of Indian golf is a true championship course having hosted some of the biggest international and national events. The course promises to give these youngsters a chance to test their mettle in a competitive atmosphere. Each of the strategically laid out holes tests the golfers’ accuracy.
TATA Steel who support various sports have adopted golf in a big way and are very keen to grow the game from the grass root level. The TATA Steel IGU East Zone junior Tour is a true challenge to unearth talent and help young players to take up a game and prepare them to play the sport professionally.
This has been proved by the young turks during the current season which has visited three other cities.
A challenging lay out and with almost all the top bracket of players on the IGU Order of Merit participating, there can be no deadly concoction for the golfing enthusiasts of Kolkata.
