Chandigarh: The 19th AK Mishra All India Boxing Championship presented by Monnet Ispat & Energy Limited saw some spectacular action on day three. The five day-long event is being held at Chandigarh from March 7th to 11th 2012. Day two of quarter-final action brought with it some close fights, loads of aggression and plenty of wining moves from the Young Turks of Indian boxing. The crowd was treated to some high octane pugilism in the very first bout of the day in the light welter weight division (64kg) when G Satish of Andhra Pradesh locked horns with Manoj from Himachal Pradesh. Both boxers attacked with unrelenting fervour, not letting the other get too far ahead. After nine minutes of a see saw battle, the scores were knotted at 15 all. In the end though, it was Manoj who emerged victorious on judges’ count back.
The light welter weight cadre (64kg) continued to enthral the spectators with the other bouts also going down to the wire. Sumit of ASI, Pune had to dig deep against Bijender of All India Police. Taking advantage of his opponent losing steam in the last minute of the bout, he advanced to the semi-finals with a 17:12 victory on points. Mohd. Ismail of Delhi also had to rough it out against the solid performance put up by Pitamber of Madhya Pradesh. But in the end, the Delhi boxer was able to scrape through with a slender lead. He won on points 17:15.
In the welter weight category (69kg), Suman of Bihar and Rohit of the AIP team were immersed in another close encounter. Suman gave some tough opposition to Rohit, but the AIP boxer, with his sound tactics and resilient attack managed to edge past into the semis with a score of 23.19.
Bout number 10 of the day and it was a case of sheer dominance, when Naveen of Haryana, recorded a clear win over on points 25:9, over local lad Mandeep Malik of the Chandigarh B team, gliding in to the round of four of the Middle weight division (75kg). Sarabjit Singh also registered an easy win over Rahul of Tamil Nadu, prevailing 17:7 on points.
