Sub-junior men’s hockey: A winning start for Tamil Nadu, beat Kerala 3-1

New Delhi: On the Day 1 of 4th Hockey India Sub- Junior Men’s National Championship 2014 (Division A) played at Ranchi, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu gave a winning start to the tournament giving a tough fight to Kerala by 3-1 while Odisha took the win with its 11 goal margin over Chhattisgarh.

In a Pool A match, played between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, a hard- hitting game play was witnessed where the former defeated the later with 3-1 score on the board. The first half of the game was disappointing for Kerala as they did not manage to score any goal. Defending well, Tamil Nadu scored three goals, out which the opening goal came from S Clarance Sushil in the 9th minute through a penalty corner. Two back to back goals were scored by H B Jeevakumar and Parul Murgan in 16th and 22nd minute respectively taking the lead to 3-0.

When in the second half, Tamil Nadu played below par and did not strike any goal, putting tremendous efforts to the game Kerela played back and pierced in a field goal by Sinjith V in the 48th minute reducing the margin to 3-1, declaring a clear win for Tamil Nadu.

In another match between Hockey Odisha and Chhattisgarh it was the former which was victorious in its first match in the Championship with their 11 goals and now allowing the opponent a single goal scoring opportunity. Suraj Minz in the 3rd minute into the game scored the 1st goal for the team with the second goal coming through a penalty corner opportunity in the 11thminute through Sudhir Kujur’s stick. Just before the end of the first half the team increased the lead further with its 3rd goal in the 33rd minute and it was Amit Chirmako who chipped in for the team this time.

In the second half the Hockey Odisha continued their attack with their 4th goal coming in the 37rd minute and within 2 minutes the team scored 3 back to back goals in the 42nd, 44th and 45th minute and taking the tally to 7-0. Hockey Odisha added another 4 goals and took a comfortable win over Chhattisgarh.

In the 3rd match between Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh it was Buddu Tuti who opened the score card in the 5th minute through a field goal. It was then Kumud Kullu stick in the 15th minute which scored the 2nd goals for the team. Jharkhand was leading the tally 3-0 at the end of first half with the 3rd and 4th goal coming in the 31st minute. Andhra Pradesh tried making a comeback in the match and scored its 1st and sole goal in the 34th minute when Sai Kiran Bonala scored through a field goal. Jharkhand added another 2 goals in the second half in the 42nd and 59th minute giving them a good win over the opponents.
