Kolkata: Local lad SK Pappu caused the biggest upset when he ousted second seed and India international Trishul Chinnappa in the first round of the matchplay event of the Tata Steel Eastern India Amateur Golf Championship being played at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Thursday. Pappu was a 1-up winner over the Bangalore lad.
While Pappu brought cheer to the home crowd, Citymate Viraj Madappa, seeded ninth went down to 23rd seed Ankur Chadha 2&1. The rest of the top ranked players advanced to the second round without breaking much sweat. Top seed Samarth Dwivedi breezed past HS Kang 3&2 while third seed Aman Raj walloped 30th seed S Siddhartha 6&4.
Pappu exuded confidence when he squared the first two holes with both the players making par. However, Chinnappa went 1-up on the third hole while winning the fourth as well while making an eagle on the par-5 hole. Leading by 2-up after the first nine, Chinnappa lost the advantage when he lost two consecutive holes on the 11th and 12th. A birdie by Pappu on the 14th hole put him ahead for the first time in the match. However, with two holes to go, Chinnappa made a birdie on the 17th to win and make it all square. On the final hole, Pappu finished with a par against Chinnappa’s bogey to win the match on the 18th.
“Up against a better player, I did not have any expectations. I just wanted to play well,” said Pappu after the unlikely win. “I had the advantage of playing on my home course but matchplay is a different ball game. I hope to win as many matches as I can,” he added.
