Surjit Hockey: Air India wear the crown

Jalandhar: Air India, Mumbai clinched the 28th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament title by beating Indian Oil, Mumbai 4-2 at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here on Saturday.



In the finals, both teams displayed some fantastic and controlled hockey. In the 8th minute of the game, Deepak Thakur of Indian Oil missed the chance to score while Air India’s Sammed Dad too followed suit two minutes later. But in the 18th minute, Dharamvir singh of Indian Oil put their team ahead with field goal from the left flank (1-0). At half time Indian Oil was leading by 1-0.

After the break, Air India started putting pressure on the Indian Oil and scored the equaliser in the 45th minute when Joga Singh netted the ball from the top of the circle (1-1).  In the 49th minute, Air India took the lead when Rahul Shilpkar converted the penalty corner (2-1), but three minutes later, Affan Yousuf converted the penalty corner to equalize (2-2) for Indian Oil. Three minutes later Air India earned a penalty corner and Rahul Shilpkar made no mistake to convert it for a 3-2 lead.In the 67th minute of the play Rahul Shilpkar converted the third penalty corner for Air India, making it 4-2. Finally, Air India won by the same score.

This was Air India’s maiden Surjit Hockey title. The winners bagged 2.50 Lakh, trophy and one Quintal Almonds where as the runners up bagged 1.50 Lakhs and trophy.

Affan Yousuf of Indian Oil Mumbai declared the best player of the tournament and awarded the gold medal. Chief Guest Tikshan Sud, Cabinet Minister, Punjab gave away the prizes. Surjit Hockey Society facilitated Pargat Singh with the lifetime achievement award with Rs 1 lakh. Pargat Singh donated this money for the upliftment of junior hockey in the state.
