Surjit Hockey: ONGC, Air India register wins

Jalandhar: Spirited ONGC, Dehradun grounded Punjab National Bank, Delhi by 6-1 while Air India, Mumbai beat Corp. of Signals, Jalandhar (3-2) in the 28th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament here at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park on Tuesday.



In Pool B encounter, both ONGC and PNB combined well in the first half but it was Diwakar Ram who gave ONGC the lead (1-0) in the 19th minute when he  converted the penalty corner. In the 39th minute, PNB captain Jalwinder Singh scored the equalizer (1-1). After that ONGC Boys displayed fast and controlled game and in the 48th and 51st minute of the play Pramod Kumar scored two goals to give ONGC a 3-1 lead. In the 57th minute of the play Bikash Toppo scored the field goal after dodging goalkeeper, making it 4-1 and Preetinder Singh scored the fifth goal for ONGC (5-1) in the 59th minute. In the dying minutes of the game, Diwakar Ram converted another penalty corner to complete the tally (6-1). Punjab National Bank are now out of the race of semi finals of the tournament, where as ONGC will take on Namdhari XI in the next match.

Meanwhile in Pool B encounter,  Air India, Mumbai played Corp. of Signals, Jalandhar. Air India took lead in the 9th minute of the play through Birender Lakra (1-0). In the 17th minute, Signal’s Amritpal Singh equalized (1-1) but the lead was increased by Air India in the very next minute when Lalit Upadhyay struck to make 2-1. In 54th minute of the play, Rahul Shilpkar converted the penalty corner for Air India, making it 3-1. However 10 minutes later G Dass scored a field goal to reduce the margin for Corps of Signals (2-3).
