Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as India women’s captain in all three formats, with immediate effect. The 37-year-old announced it on Instagram on Tuesday and will carry on as a player. She took the T20I captaincy full-time in 2016 and led India to their first ODI World Cup title in 2025. Her last assignment was Asian Games gold in Japan.

India v Uruguay halted by lightning at 1-1

India’s friendly against Uruguay at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium was stopped in the 27th minute on Tuesday evening because of lightning around the ground. Darwin Núñez put Uruguay ahead from the penalty spot in the 12th minute, and Anirudh Thapa equalised ten minutes later. It is India’s last match of the window before November’s SAFF Championship.

Mukesh Kumar’s six-for wins Irani Cup for Rest of India

Rest of India beat Ranji Trophy champions Jammu and Kashmir by 167 runs in Srinagar on Sunday to win the Irani Cup. Set 279, J&K needed only a draw to take the trophy on first-innings lead but were bowled out for 111. Mukesh Kumar took six for 33 and Akash Deep three for 25. Smaran Ravichandran, with 68 and 135, was player of the match.

India and West Indies fined for slow over-rates

India have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees and West Indies 10 per cent for slow over-rates in Saturday’s third ODI in New Chandigarh. Match referee Prakash Bhatt ruled India four overs short and West Indies two. Both captains accepted the charges. India won the series 2-1, and the five-match T20I series began in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Free Uruguay tickets for fans let down by Messi event

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari says 22,000 fans who bought tickets for last December’s chaotic Lionel Messi event in Kolkata will get free tickets for the India-Uruguay match. The plan still needs state cabinet approval. For the Brazil game on Saturday, 20,000 seats were left unsold to avoid overcrowding, and about 51,000 people attended without trouble.

Vithya Ramraj’s 54.72 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Asian Games broke PT Usha’s national record of 55.42, set at the 1984 Olympics. Several other national records fell in Aichi-Nagoya. Sawan Barwal ran 2:11:37 for marathon silver, India’s first marathon medal since 1982, and Parul Chaudhary clocked 9:08.67 for steeplechase bronze.

Verstappen wins rain-hit race at Sepang

Max Verstappen won the Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Malaysia’s Sepang circuit, for his and Red Bull’s first win of 2026. The start was delayed by more than 90 minutes after heavy rain. Kimi Antonelli finished second and Lewis Hamilton third. George Russell retired late with an engine failure, and Antonelli now leads him by 84 points.
