Lucknow: The Yonex-Sunrise Syed Modi badminton championship was dealt a severe blow on the opening day when Saina Nehwal pulled out due to physical strain.
The player, the biggest attraction here, didn't meet the media and left the city in the afternoon. Her coach P Gopichand attributed it to strain after playing in the China Super Series. "She was also down with a cold," he added.
The decision of Saina, who has played against the world's best in China last week and requires time to recuperate ahead of the Korean Super Series next month, is understandable. She is likely to get much better competition in Korea, in the run-up to the London Olympics. Besides, she also needs some rest at the end of the year.
