AAI picks team for London Olympics

Kolkata: A strange decision on the part of Archery Association of India (AAI) has left the national archers in a limbo.

The association has decided to consider the scores in the selection trials for the Asian Championship, which was held in the last week of September, as the qualifying yardstick for the 2012 London Olympics.

Accordingly, the three members of the women's recurve team - Deepika Kumari, Bombayala Devi and Chekrovolu Swuro - who secured an Olympic team quota place for India along with Jayanta Talukdar (who won an individual quota place) have been confirmed for the Games.

In the women's section, Rimil Buriuly, Laxmi Rani Majhi and Seema Verma have been kept as standbyes, while Tarundeep Rai, Rahul Banerjee, Atanu Das, Mangal Singh Champia and Thupuvoyi Swuro find themselves as probables in the men's section. The Indian men still stand a chance to win Olympic team quota place through competitions next year.
