Chennai: Levon Aronian seemed to call the shots against world champion Viswanathan Anand in their fourth-round game of Tal Memorial chess tournament on Saturday but he could do so only until the Indian methodically simplified the position to a rook and pawn ending.
With white, the Armenian had to finally accept a draw after 60 moves when Anand, for the major part fighting with a pawn less on the queenside in Gruenfeld defence, showed exemplary technique in holding the position. With this, Anand has four draws and no wins in the tournament named after his childhood idol.
Earlier on Friday, the leaderboard became crowded after the third round with Levon Aronian of Armenia, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Sergey Karjakin (both Russia) and Magnus Carlsen (Norway) jointly leading with two points each. Round 3 also marked a black day for white as all the three decisive games ended in black wins.
