Bathinda: Indian women kabaddi team players had a narrow escape on Thursday when the bus they were travelling in caught fire after colliding with an Army vehicle, leaving the bus driver and an escort dead and four sportspersons injured. The injured players have been admitted to Adesh hospital near Bathinda.
The Indian team was scheduled to play the semifinal match with the US on Friday in Bathinda. The air-conditioned bus escorted by a Ludhiana policeman was carrying 14 players and three coaches from Ludhiana.
According to eye-witnesses, the Army truck first collided with the pilot vehicle and then with the bus. The Army vehicle immediately caught fire. Seeing the bus also catch fire, people working in nearby fields rushed to the site and pulled out the players after breaking open the window panes.
