Devvarman goes down fighting

St. Petersburg: Somdev Devvarman lost 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 to Croatia's Marin Cilic in the second round of the St. Petersburg Open on Thursday.

At Istanbul, Maria Sharapova's season ended in disappointment on Wednesday after her hopes of regaining the title at the WTA Championships after a seven-year gap and dethroning Caroline Wozniacki as the World No.1 were dashed.

The Russian withdrew from the tournament after losing 7-6(4), 6-4 to Li Na.

That ensured that Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki would become the year-end World No. 1 for the second successive year.

However, the Dane was unable to celebrate that with a victory as she was beaten 6-2, 6-4 by Petra Kvitova on Thursday.

On Wednesday too, Wozniacki was beaten 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 by Vera Zvonareva.
