Ajay, Arvind, Sindhu in Dutch Open quarters

Nagpur: Contrary to the second day when Indians dominated the proceedings at the Dutch Open Grand Prix, the outcome on Thursday was a mixed one for them at Almere, Netherlands.

Barring Ajay Jayaram and Arvind Bhat, other Indians, who were in action on Thursday, bowed out from the men's singles in the second round.

In the women's singles, Sindhu remained the only hope after Arundhati Pantawane crashed out in the second round. The teenager from Hyderabad, Sindhu, rallied back strongly to oust Judith Meulendijks of Netherlands.

The local girl, ranked 54th in the world, got off to a flying start by winning the first game. However, Sindhu, world No. 76, bounced back gallantly to seal the last eight berth with a 12-21, 21-13, 21-10 victory in 41 minutes.

Arundhati, who raised the expectations of her fans by shocking the No. 3 seed Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand in the first round on Wednesday, failed to live up to the challenge. The Nagpur shuttler wasted a golden chance to avenge her Czech Open final defeat against Kristina Gavnholt but twice in three weeks, she could not get the better of Czech girl.
