Sourav Ganguly is back in news. Former Aussie skipper Steve Waugh has said, “Ganguly was always late for the toss which according to me is a sign of lack of respect for the game.” Though Waugh didn’t have much issues with that but at times match referee did warn the former Indian captain about that.
Throwing some light on the controversial incident, he was quoted by Deccan Chronicle saying, "The fact that he turned up late every game -- it was his choice. I just thought it showed a lack of respect for the game. It didn't really affect me. The match referee actually told him that he had to turn up on time," Waugh said when asked about the controversial episode.
Time and again Ganguly has denied this kind of allegations of Waugh by saying that it happened just once and not as many times the Aussie skipper says. "There is a tradition that both team captains have to sport the team blazer while going for the toss. On that particular day, I did not get my blazer and it took time to get hold of it... That was the reason for the delay," Ganguly had said.
Apart from that, he looks quite confident about the chances of Australia winning the third test especially after they had a good start on Day 1.
Meanwhile, the reports published in DNA quoted Waugh saying, "Australia have begun well in the third Test at Old Trafford. Hope we can make a comeback in the remaining three Tests. The current Australian side is inexperienced, while England is experienced lot. We nearly won the first Test at Trent Bridge. So we need to just hang in there and have faith in our abilities."
"The young Australian players are immensely talented. We have a lot of talent, especially in bowling department," he added.
Waugh also believes that too much of changes in the squad is not good, especially when most of the players are inexperienced. He wants Aussie selectors to make a nucleus of this team first and then think of chopping and changing.
He was quoted by The Hindu saying, "Constant chopping and changing deters players' confidence. The good thing that the selectors can do is to stick to a team which they believe in. The players can use the opportunity to prove their abilities.”
He rates test cricket as the best of all as it tests your all your dimension as a cricketer. He adds that T20 is not good enough to judge the potential of any player.
"Try and play for your country in Test cricket first; all the other things will fall in place afterwards. You can't find such testing situations in Twenty20 cricket," he said.
