“Poor decision from third-umpire spoiled our chances to break the jinx,” said English skipper Alastair Cook. He was very much disappointed with the decision of third umpire who gave Ian Bell out when it was quite clear from the different angle that he was not out. With this win over England, MS Dhoni became the first Captain to win all the major ICC titles.
England lost the finals by just five runs at Birmingham on Sunday and their thirst of winning the ICC’s ODI event remained unquenched. Cook was quoted by Indian Express saying,” Dismissal of Bell simply turned the game in India’s favour and that finally cost us this major finals. We lost the great opportunity to do something special in the final of an ICC tournament.” Cook was devastated after his team wasn’t able to break the jinx of not winning the ICC tournament for almost four decades.
Dhoni took the bails off in a flash and it was Ravindra Jadeja who bowled that ball to Ian Bell. Bruce Oxenford, who was the third umpire, gave his decision in bowler's favour even when the replays showed that the batsmen managed to get his feet back.
English skipper was quoted by Times of India saying, "I thought it was a poor decision. I only saw the replay a couple of times on the Belly one. Maybe he (TV umpire) saw a different angle than we saw. It looked pretty clear that it was in, but he's paid to make the decisions. If he had made the decision, it's the umpire's game, so that's said.”
He added, “Look, towards the end, you're always going to spinning as much as that is, it's very hard for the new guys coming in. So we needed a batter in at the end if we wanted to win that game. It’s all confidential.”
