Awful shots and tumbling wickets were the common site on the first day of the first test of Ashes series which is being played at Trent Bridge. Slamming the batsmen of both sides English great Geoffrey Boycott said, “Most of the batsmen of both sides played some awful shots and were lacking technique to play the swinging deliveries.”
Peter Siddle destroyed the England batting as he ended up with the figures of 5/50. But the brilliant spells from Steven Finn and James Anderson brought England back into the game. James Anderson bowled beauty of a delivery to send Michael Clarke back to the pavilion.
"Michael Clarke was dismissed by an absolute yorker but a lot of batsmen on both sides gave their wickets away. It just swung in the air and there have been some awful shots. Playing swing is a skill -- you have to see the line and play it as late as possible. "
Boycott was quoted by Hindustan Times saying, "Jonathan Trott's dismissal was one of the most disappointing because he had played so well to get to 48. He was so confident in his footwork. He looked like he was on for a big one until he tried to chase a ball that was very wide. He would have struggled to get to that with a stump."
Pointing out at the poor starts that England has been making in every Test they play, frustrated Boycott said, "It's been happening too often, where England collapse in the first innings of the first Test match of a series. It has happened against New Zealand, India, Pakistan and even Sri Lanka. It's got to be a mental thing."
