In his first assignment as the limited-overs coach, Ashley Giles saw England suffer a 2-3 loss to India but he says it was "not a disaster" and the series has been a "good learning" experience for his "fairly inexperienced side", says a report in The Hindu.
As per the reports England ODI coach Ashley Giles added, "We've tried a lot of different combinations and learnt a lot of different things even in games we've lost," said Giles. "Woakes has come in and Buttler has taken the gloves, Root has been phenomenal. So we are finding out more about the guys as the series has gone on."
When asked about James Tredwell, he was quoted by Times of India saying that, “It just gives us great options I don’t see at some point why you couldn’t play with two off-spinners in the same side.” Of the contenders, Joe Root and James Tredwell have seized the opportunity while Craig Kieswetter and Jade Dernbach have failed to prove their worth for the team. Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler also got couple of opportunities and the whole team including the captain, Alastair Cook, have learnt their lessons from the changes in fielding regulations especially from MS Dhoni with his blistering knock in the second match in Kochi.
England now head towards New Zealand, for a three-match Twenty20 series and three ODI’s under the captaincy of Broad and Cook respectively. This series will decide who will make it into ODI squad for England for the Champions Trophy in May.
Giles gave some clues on the game plan for future events and was quoted by Daily Mail that, “They are likely to return to the strategy of playing four seamers as they did with such success against Australia, West Indies and South Africa last summer and that will surely axe the role of part-timers Joe Root and Samit Patel which were not much effective in the recent ODI series against India.
The balance will be something we look at in New Zealand because conditions will be similar to the Champions Trophy," added Giles. That could be bad news for Patel and possibly also for Tredwell, despite his excellent record in India. "With Trott coming back to the side and all the bowlers including Swann, it might be tough on Tredwell," said Giles, hinting that the senior spinner will retain his spot for the first match of that ODI series.
It looks like England has got variety in their pace attack with James Anderson ,Stuart Broad, Steve Finn and Tim Bresnan and in the spin attack duo of Graeme Swann James Tredwell can do wonders for them especially with the new rules in the shorter format of the game and they look a very tough side to beat especially in their home conditions.
