New Zealand prevailed in what was called the battle of the underdogs and displayed a dominating performance to beat Bangladesh by 59 runs in the group D opener on Friday.
A report in the Hindu says that it was Brendon McCullum’s superb century led New Zealand to a thumping win over Bangladesh.
McCullum scored 123 off 58 balls and hammered 11 fours and seven sixes in a strong Kiwi total of 191-3.
Nasir Hossain played a lone fight and scored 50 off 39 balls as Bangladesh settled for 132-8 with Tim Southee (3-16) and Kyle Mills (3-33) doing the damage.
McCullum became the first man to score two T20 centuries and the highest ever before he holed out in the deep off the last ball of the innings.
Meanwhile the Hindustan Times writes that Brendon McCullum registered the highest individual Twenty20 scored of 123 to lead New Zealand to an emphatic 191-3 in 20 overs before Bangladesh were restricted to 132-8 in their allotted overs.
Former champions Pakistan are the third team in the group, from where the top two will advance to the Super Eights round.
