Hockey is not the national game of the country: Sports Ministry

Hockey which is considered as the national game of India is actually not the truth as the Indian Government has never declared the game as the national game of India.

The Times of India writes that in an RTI filed by 10 year old Aishwariya Parashar asking when the Government declared Hockey as the national sport, the reply from the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports came that it is nowhere mentioned in the records about Hockey’s national game status.

“I haven't come across any order or notification in the ministry saying hockey is the national game."It's known to be a national game in general parlance," SPS Tomar, under secretary, Union ministry of youth affairs and sports was quoted in the report while responding to the query.

The response contradicts GoI's own announcement, made on its official website (india.gov.in), where it is not mentioned that hockey is the national game but also talks about India's glorious`hockey' history.

According the report the response has left the Hockey fraternity fuming. "They should then tell us which is the national game and show us the notification which says hockey is not a national game," says Olympian Sujit Kumar.

"Instead of talking nonsense, they (govt) should do something to improve the game and work for betterment of hockey players," the report further quoted another Olympian Syed Ali.
