AIFF to shift practice camp for Nehru Cup out of capital due to lack of proper practice turf

Lack of good practice pitch has forced the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to move the national team’s camp for the upcoming Nehru Cup out of New Delhi says a Mail Today report. Gurgaon, Bangalore and Jamshedpur are the three cities that have been shortlisted by the AIFF for the camp which starts of 27th of this month.

The decision came after national coach expressed his displeasure over the turf at the outer ground of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and was also unhappy with the main turf in the stadium. AIFF General Secretary acknowledged the problem and admitted that they are thinking of alternate venues for the camp.

The Athletics Federation of India has decided to recommend all the 14 athletes who have qualified for the Olympics their participation in the London Games. According to a report in The Hindu AFI president Adille Sumariwala said that the selection committee felt all the athletes should be given a chance to go to London even though some of them have only crossed the ‘B’ qualification standard.

Following are the 14 athletes qualified for London Olympics:

Men: Vikas Gowda (discus throw); Om Prakash Singh Karhana (shot put); Gurmeet Singh, Baljinder Singh and K T Irfan (all 20km walk); Basant Bahadur Rana (50km walk); Ram Singh Yadav (marathon); Renjith Maheswary (triple jump)

Women: Krishna Poonia and Seema Antil (discus throw); Mayookha Johny (triple jump); Tintu Luka (800m); Sudha Singh (300m steeplechase); Sahana Kumari (high jump).

A report in The Times of India reports that a 25 year old footballer Mahesh Thapa playing in a local tournament in Jailpaiguri died after an on field collision. Thapa who was playing as striker for Chhayachhobi Club after he collided with Parasmoni Club goalkeeper Sachin Rai in the match under lights at Torolpara, about two kilometres from his home. He was rushed to the hospital, but lack of ICU beds could not see him getting admitted to the hospital.
