Pune: Kingfisher East Bengal lived on Tolgay Ozbey’s magic run from the flanks as the Kolkata giants made amazing comeback after being down 0-1 till the 69th minute before scoring pulsating 4-1 win against ‘host’ Mumbai FC in the third round match of the I-League football Championship at the Balewadi Sports Complex here on Wednesday.
Sampath Kuttimani’s 33rd minute goal was forgotten in a huff after Tolgay and his fellow forwards ran through the Mumbai FC defence after having weighed them for quite some time. As the time was flying off, it became ugly for a while when East Bengal searched for that elusive goal.
Sanju Pradhan chanced on a defensive error from Mumbai FC defence to bring parity in the 69th minute and soon after Tolgay rushed up from the right collecting Gurwinder Singh’s cross and sending a smashing shot into the post (70th).
The match was well within East Bengal grasp, but their frustration of having allowed Mumbai FC free run for long came out when Reisangmi Vashum fired in the 81st minute to make it 3-1. It was a move set up by Baljit Sahni, who found Tolgay lurking in the box. But when Tolgay realised that too many defenders were onto him he released the ball for Vashum to complete the formalities.
Four minutes were added to the regulation time and East Bengal decided to make most of the opportunity. On a free-kick from top of the box, Alan Gow sent a curling ball that landed into the top right corner before dropping into the net for the winning 4-1 score-line.
