New Delhi: 14 Battalion NCC, Manipur, became the first Junior Girls (Under-17) team to seal its quarterfinal berth in the 56th Subroto Cup Football Tournament, when the Manipuri girls routed Gayatri Vidyapeeth Shantikunj from Uttarakhand 19-0 at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Government Senior Secondary School from Bhiwani (Haryana) also moved into the last-eight stages when they scrapped past Presbyterian English School (Mizoram) with a solitary goal in a match played at NWC ground. The lone goal came from skipper Nisha.
The first set of quarterfinals in the girls section will take place on Sunday.
A seven goal-spree by W. Ranji Bala Devi was the highlight of NCC’s domination which was carried on by teammates with goals from TH Preemita Devi (2m, 24m), Y. Thailand Devi (5, 47, 55), Thaibi Devi (15, 38, 40), TH Jardabi Devi (58), TH Geetharani Devi (33), T. Bombem Devi (42) and A. Norgpokleima (50). Faced with such a goal-glut, one cannot blame the opposition for not trying as every bit of effort by the Uttrakhand girls went in vain as NCC hardly let the ball possession go their rival’s way.
Taking cue from NCC, St. Mary’s Higher Scondary School from Tamil Nadu handed out KD Vidyalaya and Junior College from Maharashtra with the heaviest 26-0 defeat in the tournament. M. Malavika of Tamil Nadu was on a rampage, hitting the target a dozen times with substantial contributions coming from K. Rasika (7 goals) and A. Karthika (5 goals).
There was no respite from the goal-spree as Rashtriya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Delhi, humiliated another Delhi outfit, Air Force Bal Bharti School 8-0, thanks to Prerna Negi’s enterprising inroads and finding the net four times.
In another match, Hazaribagh Higher Secondary school from Jharkhand showed their true colours when they beat Sarla Bhupendra Nath Sarkar High School from West Bengal 7-0. Dular Marandi struck three times, while Mamta Kumar and Sandhya scored a brace each.
Sujata Baro was the savior for SAI North East Regional Centre, Guwahati, as her goal in the closing minutes helped her team draw 2-2 against SAM GMR Sports School from Kerala. Incidentally, this was the lone match that ended in a draw in the tournament so far.
The Kerala school girls played with a lot of verve and some aggression that it translated in to early goal when Ammukutty struck in the very third minute of the match. However, Sujata Baro restored party seven minutes after but the lanky Kerala striker put her team up in the 28th minute as teams went for the break. On resumptions, the teams indulged in long-ball play with no goal-bearing move happening on either side. When it looked as if the Kerala squad would return to their hotel with full points, Sujata Baro made most of a defence lapse to find the equaliser just before the hooter went long.
Earlier, Myngkon Higher Secondary School, Meghalaya, scored a facile 1-0 victory over Mata Rukhmani Sewa Sansthan, Chhattisgar. The lone goal came via the boot of Pynhun Shulet just a minute before the interval.
Sainik boys in quarters
In the Sub-Junior Boys (Under-14) category, the Sainik School boys from Manipur did not show any mercy against Coast Guard Public School of Daman as the former pounded 14 goals with no reply coming from their opponents. The Manipur outfit qualified for the quarterfinals, to be played on Monday.
The interesting part about the match was that for the first fifteen minutes nothing happened. But what followed was mayhem unleashed on the team from Daman and Diu and the worst sufferer was the man under Daman team bar at the NWC gound.
Javed started the proceedings with a goal in the sixteenth minute. He added three more to his kitty while his teammates Jael Haokit (18, 20), Bhagat Huidron (34, 37), M. Kamesh Singh (24), Kamta Singh (39, 42, 47), Rohit Hemang (41), and D. Mowarson (45) contributed in good measures.
In another match, Don Bosco School from Goa proved too hot for St. John’s High School, Chandigarh as the Panjim outfit won 3-0. For the Goan school Shanon Viegas scored a brace (6, 16) and Elija A. Fernandes struck in the 34th minute to complete the task. On the other hand, the school from Sector 26 could hardly make a worthwhile move in the entire 50 minutes of the match.
In the third match, H Elias Higher Secondary School, Meghalaya, beat Namchi Sports Hostel, Sikkim, 7-0, with Kinsai scoring the maximum of three goals, while N. Mahesh, Vincent and Batshken making useful contributions.
Contesting for supremacy among foreign outfits, Afghanistan school defeated Bangladesh Krida Prathisthan 2-0. The Afghanis were not only agile on the field but made quick movements which helped them beat a docile Bangla team. The winners scored a goal in each half, first in the 22nd minute when Farsheed struck. It was followed up in the second session by Rasheed.
