New Delhi: In what is turning out to be a clear domination of northeastern teams, Bijang Loubuk Junior High School, Manipur handed out an 8-1 thrashing to The Shri Ram School, Delhi NCR, who suffered their second successive heavy defeat to literally bow out of Pool E at NWC ground, while another team from the region Nakachar Hr Sec School, Assam defeated Maharana Pratap Sports College, Uttarakhand 6-0 in Pool F of the Sub-Junior 56th Subroto Cup Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.
Similarly, the team from NSS MP Shikshya Niketan, Odisha in Pool C had a very good outing, beating Govt. High School, Haryana 6-0 to earn full points. Nevertheless, it will be an uphill task for the Odisha team, who has a match tomorrow against Mizoram, to get a quarterfinal berth. For the moment Mizoram is sitting pretty, having beaten Haryana yesterday by a huge margin (11-0) in their opening fixture.
On a day which saw a crowded schedule—with 10 matches for both today and tomorrow—the focus was more on the Under 14 boys of northeastern teams that have traditionally been doing well. The heavy scheduling for two days also is an indication of the two quarterfinals that will be played Tuesday, September 15.
Bijang Loubuk Jr High School, Manipur started and ended the match against hapless The Sri Ram Delhi NCR team with the same pace and aggression, though they could have swelled their tally by scoring a few more goals. The hero for the Manipur team was none other than Mangmin Thang who scored five goals, thanks to a constant feeding to the forward by his teammates.
The Manipur boys exploited the chinks in NCR’s defence and working well on their flanks never relaxed their grip. In fact, the Delhi boys did not have a clue to stop the march of Manipur strikers. The NCR team has a pool match in hand against Car Nicobar, but the result of which is not going to alter the fate of the Delhi squad.
The Assam boys, too, found an easy meat in Uttarakhand team composition. The boys from the hills were too busy countering Assam that they at times forgot marching ahead of the half-line so that a few goal-bearing chances can come their way. Unfortunately, they were indulging in guarding their half, yet the Assam boys made deep inroads to pierce through. Striker A. Roy Das struck five out of six, indicating the command he has over the ball.
As for the Odisha team, Haryana were no match to their opponents. D. Sanjay scored the maximum (3 goals) for the winners while Haryana were mute spectators.
In other matches, Sports Hostel, Nagaland beat Air Force Bal Bharti School 6-0, match ended in tie between NCC, Delhi & The Air Force School, Subroto Park, Delhi scores being 0-0, Farook Hr Secondary School, Kerala beat Govt.
