I-League: Mohd Sporting in a must-win situation

Mohammedan-Sporting-260Kolkata: Mohammedan Sporting entertain Shillong Lajong in a rearranged fixture of the Airtel I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Kolkata giants ended a five-match winless streak at the weekend as they came from behind to record a vital 2-1 victory over fellow relegation contenders Rangdajied United.

But Mohammedan Sporting are still not safe yet as they are only two points ahead of rock-bottom Churchill Brothers despite playing an extra game.

Thus Mohammedan Sporting’s fate is not in their hands but they must win their remaining two fixtures to capitalise on any slip-up from Churchill Brothers.

However the black and whites haven’t won back-to-back I-League fixtures this season and have managed to keep a clean sheet in only one of their last 11 matches.

Since Mohammedan Sporting don’t score enough goals, a good performance at the back will be necessary and coach Sanjoy Sen warned his players to guard against any complacency.

“It was good to get back to winning ways but the danger of relegation still remains so we can’t relax and must focus on getting three points in the next game also,” Sen was quoted saying.

Shillong Lajong have no such fears of going down and have been in the top half of the table for the majority of the campaign. They were not in action at the weekend but suffered a defeat at home in their last game against Mumbai FC two weeks ago.

The north-east club are currently seventh and still have three more games left. Coach Thangboi Singto wants his side to give their best in all those matches and secure a top-seven finish at least.

“I have been saying you know that top seven has been our target from the beginning of the season and I will stick to that. Top five was going to be very tough and it’s so tight as the other teams below us are also catching up while there are some teams above that are not far away. It’s still open but we would like to finish in the top seven,” Singto stated.

The reverse fixture in Shillong was won 2-1 by Lajong earlier in the season so now they have the chance to do the double over Mohammedan Sporting and dent their survival hopes.
