England beat India in a thriller at Eden Gardens: Top 5 ODI matches played at the venue

1. India Vs Pakistan in 2004 - It was the lone ODI played for BCCI Platinum Jubilee Match in 2004/05. India stuck 293 mainly because of Yuvraj Singh’s 78, Bengal Dada Sourav Ganguly’s 48 and Kolkata Hero VVS Laxman 43. But Indian bowlers disappointed the lovely crowd of Kolkata. Salman Butt was the hero for Pakistan. His innings of 108 not out from 130 balls changed the match for the visitors. Pakistan also got useful runs from Shoaib Malik and Inzamam Ul Haq. As the result Pakistan defeated India by 6 wickets and 1 over to spare. Salman Butt was named man of the match for his brilliant 108 runs.

2. India Vs England in 2002 – The first of the 6-match ODI series, India won the toss and opted to bat first. India posted a decent total of 281 in 50 overs. Dinesh Mongia (76), Sourav Ganguly (42) and Sachin Tendulkar (36) were the major contributors in that score. In reply, Marcus Edward Trescothick was the only highlight of the England innings. His superb knock of 121 went in vain as Indian bowlers chipped in with regular wickets. The hosts bowled out England for 259 in 44 overs. India won the match by 22 runs. For his superb innings of 121 Marcus Edward Trescothick was the man of the match.

3. India Vs Sri Lanka in 2014 – This match is mainly remembered only because of Rohit Sharma‘s marathon innings of 264. He is the only Indian to have 2 double hundreds and he is the highest scorer for in ODIs. His 264 runs powered India to a massive target of 404. Sri Lanka had lost the game already when they conceded 404 runs. The visitors didn’t even cross 300-run mark in that chase. Indian bowlers did well to bowl out the Lankans for just 251 in 43.1 overs. Dhawal Kulkarni was the pick of the Indian bowlers. He picked up 4 wickets for just 34 in his 10 overs spell. India won the match by massive 153 runs. Rohit Sharma was rightly named the man of the match.

4. India Vs South Africa in 1993 – It was the first semi-final between India and South Africa for the Hero Cup trophy. India were bowled for just 195 in 50 overs, thanks to Richard Snail and PS de Villiers. Indian bowlers restricted the Proteas for just 193 in 50 overs. Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev and Ajay Jadeja had done a marvellous job in that matc, which India won by 2 runs.

5. Australia Vs England 1987 World Cup Final - In the all-important final, Australia batted and scored 253 for 5 in 50 overs. David Boon and Dean Jones were the top scorers for the Aussies. England fell just 7 runs short. The key wickets of Bill Athey, Allan Lamb and Mike Gatting in quick successions allowed Australia to win the 1987/88 World Cup. David Boon was named the man of the match in the final.
