The selectors will also pick the squad for two practice games on 10th and the 12th of January at the CCI stadium.
Player like Ashwin may be rested, while Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Mohd Shami will miss out due to injuries.
Many new faces are also in the frame of selectors’ mind. Ishan Kishen, Rishab Pant and Shabaz Nadeem may get chance to represent their country for the first time.
Many players may make their comebacks into the Indian team. Out of form Shikhar Dhawan, veteran spinner Amit Mishra and Bhuneshwar Kumar may be looked in for this home series.
Players like Kedar Jadhav, Mandeep Singh, Karun Nair and Faisal Iqbal are likely to be retained in the squad. They were the part of New Zealand series as well. These players also performed well in Ranji Trophy and with India A
In the absence of Ravi Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Parvez Rasool can be India’s main spin bowlers.
Mohd Shami is out of the team because of his injury. In his absence Bhuneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah are most likely to handle the department of fast bowling.
Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja could be the main all rounders in the team, while MS Dhoni will come in as wicket-keeper and middle order batsman.
However, there is still question mark over the selection of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh? Will Kohli pick these match winners? If yes, where do they fit in the squad? These are very tough questions to be answered by the selection committee, coach and the new captain.
There would be some players who might be in the squad as surprise, as BCCI always do with their selection.
