Gros Islet: R Ashwin and Wridhiman Saha went on to score fantastic centuries and added 213 runs for the sixth wicket as Indian innings folded at 353 at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet on Wednesday. Later, in reply Kraigg Brathwaite led Windies' solid reply as his unbeaten 53-run knock guided the hosts to 107/1 at stumps.
Earlier, starting the day on 234 for five, with Ashwin on 75 and wicketkeeper Saha on 46, the duo started cautiously and added another 105 runs before Saha, who scored his maiden Test century, was caught by Shane Dowrich of Alzarri Joseph for 104. Earlier, Ashwin playing on 99, reached his ton with a towering six. In the process Ashwin became the first Indian to score multiple hundreds and take multiple five-wicket hauls in a Test series. He became the fourth player to achieve the feat.
After Saha’s fall, Ravindra Jadeja (6) joined Ashwin on the crease but failed to impress with his bat and fell cheaply to Cummins. Bhuvneshwar Kumar too departed on the very next over without disturbing his score. And after Ashwin fell to Cummins, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma failed to add anything to India’s score before Sharma was caught by Johnson Charles of Cummins’ delivery for a duck.
West Indies started their cautiously and Braithwaite and Johnson Charles added 59 runs for the first wicket before Johnson was run out by KL Rahul at 23. Bravo joined Braithwaite and they carried on their bat as Windies scored 107 runs at stumps.
