Mirpur: A five-wicket (5/50) haul by debutant left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman helped Bangladesh beat India by a comprehensive 79 runs in the first game of the three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium here on Thursday.
Despite a 95-run partnership between its openers Rohit Sharma (63) and Shikhar Dhawan (30), India were bowled out for 228 runs to suffer its fourth ODI loss to Bangladesh. Suresh Raina (40 off 40 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (32 off 42) tried their bit to save the day for India, but in vain.
Mustafizur Rahman turned out to be the unlikely hero for Bangladesh with the ball, picking up a fifer in his first international match. He was ably supported by pace partner Taskin Ahmed (2/21) and Shakib al Hasan (2/33).
Earlier, riding on some good contribution from top and middle order batsmen, the hosts had posted a challenging total of 307 runs against India who are placed second in ICC ODI rankings.
Openers Soumya Sarkar (54 off 40 balls) and Tamim Iqbal (60 off 62 balls) added 102 runs for the opening stand in only 13.4 overs to lay a solid foundation. Shakib (52 off 68 balls), Sabbir Rahaman (41 off 44 balls) and Nasir Hossain (34) batted well in the middle- order to take Bangladesh to a substantial total.
