IPL 6 auction: Who bought whom and why?

Glenn MaxwellIt was one of those Sundays when 37 cricketers got richer by crores in the sixth auction of Indian Premier League in Chennai. The nine teams spent a combined total of $11.89 million (Rs.64 crore approximately) on purchasing these players in which Glenn Maxwell emerged to be the costliest with a whopping price of $ 1 million (Rs 5.31 crore).

Maxwell, the 24-year-old right-handed Australian batsman who appeared for the Delhi Daredevils last year and had a base price of $200,000, benefitted from an aggressive bidding war between Mumbai and the IPL's latest entrants, Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Mukesh Ambani owned franchise sealed the deal after the Sun TV-owned franchise stopped at $975,000.

Let’s have a look on the some of the well-known buys and their utilities in their respective teams:

MUMBAI INDIANS

GLENN MAXWELL ($1,000,000 to Mumbai Indians (base price $200,000): The 24-year-old is all set to play for Mumbai Indians in IPL 6. Maxwell holds the record for the fastest one-day fifty in Australia's domestic history. He struck a 19-ball half-century against Tasmania during 2010-11season. He has been hot property throughout the Big Bash League and that’s why he was sold to Mumbai Indians for whooping USD 1million.

His skills in spin department are being polished by Shane Warne these days to prepare him well for the sub-continent wickets. He has scored a brilliant fifty against West Indies in first ODI and took four wickets in fourth ODI. He has shown his fruitfulness in the shorter format and that’s why he is selected for the Indian tour for upcoming Test series.

RICKY PONTING ($400,000 to Mumbai Indians (base price $400,000): He has retired from all forms of cricket but he is back in IPL to showcase his batting skills and what rare opportunity we are going to see with Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting playing for same team. Best players of their eras will make it a tough job for bowlers because of their ability to change their gears in the game they have dominated for two decades.

Ricky pointing has played some match-winning knocks in Big Bash League which made him one of the highest base price players to start off but he stuck to that throughout the bid.

PHILIP HUGHES ($100,000 to Mumbai Indians (base price $100,000): Philip Hughes recent batting form earned him a spot in Mumbai Indians but he wasn’t able to fetch up huge money in the bid. He was stuck to his base price of US$ 1,00,000. He must consider himself very lucky because he might get a chance to bat with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar which in itself a priceless opportunity.

JACOB ORAM ($50,000 to Mumbai Indians (base price $50,000): Oram, who did quite well for Chennai for past few seasons, has now been taken by Mumbai Indians. It looks Mumbai is looking to go with two or may be three all-rounders three season. Oram’s all-round ability makes him a perfect match finisher and his death bowling with Lasith Malinga can be a serious headache for all top batsmen in IPL 6.

PUNE WARRIORS

AJANTHA MENDIS ($725,000 to Pune Warriors (base price $50,000): He is no longer a 'mystery' and he has been in and out of Sri Lankan team for quite some time. Mendis previously played in the IPL in 2008-09 for defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders but in most of the matches, he was ineffective. Just going with his past records and overlooking his recent form can be a big mistake for Pune Warriors.

KANE RICHARDSON ($700,000 to Pune Warriors (base price $100,000): Kane Richardson:  It has been a dream start for the career of this budding cricketer. He has impressed everyone with his T20 skills in the lower middle order which makes him more useful and adds strength to the team combination. He is just 21 years old that comes with lot of buzz around him because of the energy that he brings in to the field makes him a player to watch out for.

ABHISHEK NAYAR: ($675,000 to Pune Warriors (base price $100,000): Abhishek Nayar's dream run continue after having a terrific Ranji season this year and now he has been sold to Pune Warriors for $675,000 for IPL 6. The southpaw is a veteran of the IPL, having previously represented Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. He has been a key player in first-class cricket in the past few seasons, averaging 57.16 with the bat and 30.02 with the ball.

HYDERABAD SUNRISERS

THISARA PERERA ($675,000 to Sunrisers Hyderabad (base price $50,000): The Sri Lankan all-rounder is a power-hitter with the bat and can pitch in with the ball as well. He has represented Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala in past seasons of the IPL but has flattered to deceive. The burden of his price tag will be on Perera's shoulders as will the responsibility of playing for the newest IPL side. Thisara Perera is on his last IPL legs and he will be pressured to deliver.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

DIRK NANNES ($600,000 to Chennai Super Kings (base price $200,000): He is one of the best bowlers in T20 cricket and in IPL he gets better. He has been a strike bowler for Delhi till now and his transfer to Chennai will be a big blow to Delhi for sure. His bowling skills alongside Doug Bollinger are going to add lot more strength to their bowling attack and getting a bowler of his class in US $6,00,000 is totally worth it.

CHRISTOPHER MORRIS:  ($625,000 to Chennai Super Kings (base price $20,000): Chris Morris, with a cheap base price of 20,000, made franchises scratch their heads. Mumbai Indians, Hyderabad Sunrisers and Chennai Super Kings were in a race to buy this young gun but it was Chennai who ended up winning the race with $625,000 for Morris. An all-rounder, the 25-year-old is looking at a bright future.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

RAVI RAMPAUL ($290,000 to Royal Challengers Bangalore (base price $50,000): Leading strike bowler for West Indies, Rampaul has been in a very good form in the past two years and has picked up lots of wicket in all the formats. He was one of the key players in West Indies T20 World Cup. His ability to bowl fast and swing the ball both ways makes him an added advantage especially in death overs.

DANIEL CHRISTIAN ($100,000 to Royal Challengers Bangalore (base price $100,000): He has been a good bowler for Deccan Chargers and his move to RCB will give him a better opportunity to showcase his bowling skills. His pinch hitting ability might come very handy especially if the middle order fails to fire on some odd-day.

PANKAJ SINGH ($150,000 to Royal Challengers Bangalore (base price $50,000): His good run in Ranji has given him a chance to play for RCB and he can be a very good buy because of his recent success on Indian pitches. He can be very handy when rotation in bowling has to be done in a certain matches.

RP SINGH ($400,000 to Royal Challengers Bangalore (base price $100,000): Spending as much as $4,00,000 on a bowler who has not even played a Ranji Match this season doesn’t look a fair deal but if one goes through his bowling record in IPL, then it can be said that he is worth it as for two seasons he has been a purple cap holder. But only time will tell whether this gamble will give RCB any profit or not.

DELHI DAREDEVILS

JOHAN BOTHA ($450,000 to Delhi Daredevils (base price $300,000): He has been one of the best off-spinners in recent time and he knows how to fox the batsmen with his bowling. His experience of bowling with the likes of Shane Warne makes him a bowler to watch out for Delhi Daredevils.

JESSE RYDER ($260,000 to Delhi Daredevils (base price $100,000): He had a poor run with Pune Warriors last session but batting with Sehwag will make him bit more comfortable as he can take his time to settle down and can come all guns blazing in the later part of the innings.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

JAMES FAULKNER ($400,000 to Rajasthan Royals (base price $100,000): He was one of the star performers in Big Bash League and he would like to carry on his good form in T20 with Rajasthan Royals. He managed to fetch $4,00,000 in the auction.

FIDEL EDWARDS ($210,000 to Rajasthan Royals (base price $100,000): Fast and Furious Fidel Edwards can be as good as Lasith Malinga. His ability to bowl Yorkers and short balls makes him a tough bowler to hit in T20 format. Alongside, Shaun Tait he can be a treat to watch as both the bowlers believes in bowling at fast pace and get the reverse swing.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

RYAN MCLAREN:($50,000 to Kolkata Knight Riders (base pirce $50,000): His all-round ability will give them a desired balance at number eight and his ability to bowl slower balls with a good variation in pace makes him a deadly bowler and especially in conditions of Eden Gardens. He has been bought for cheap price of $50,000.
