Chennai: Mitchell Johnson has made a comeback in the Australian dressing room to lead the Aussie pace attack in the Test series against India which will start from February 22 in Chennai. He was out for seven months due to a toe fracture and has given credit of his return to legend fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who has worked with him once he was done with his rehabilitation.
Lillee has worked out on his bowling in the MRF Pace Academy so that Johnson can get back the rhythm which is needed at international arena. Since Lillee knew his game very well, it was a great learning curve for him. His focus has been on bringing the ball in to the right-handers, as most of the batsmen are right handed in Indian batting line-up.
Left-arm leading pace bowler of Aussie attack, said, "Obviously, it's been an amazing experience working with Lillee. I had fair bit of time out of the game - seven months out of the game- and was able to work with him again at the MRF Pace academy as well as back home in our conditions."
"Lillee knows my game really well. I trust him very much. He has been around for me throughout my whole career. It's always nice to hear good things from him. Also nice to go out there and perform and put in what he has asked me to do," he said.
Asked about his bowling plans for Indian batsmen, he said, "Variation pays you a nice dividend if it is applied with the dedicated effort. You need to vary your pace to fox the batsmen and moreover, it all depends on the condition and the bounce on the wicket. Short-ball along with reverse swing can be applied on these pitches."
"Learning from first-hand experience is the only way to master your bowling and I hope me and Siddle will do the same. New bowlers had a good time in the practice games so they would have learnt a thing or so," said Johnson, who is aiming to bring the ball back into the right-handers and has been working on that aspect.
"Things have changed. I want to bring the ball back into the right-handers. I have been working on it with Dennis. And short-ball is something you should bowl in all conditions. You get the ball to bounce knee high, then you are going get hit all over the park."
