New Delhi: Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has come out in a support of Virender Sehwag and said that he could have been given one more opportunity keeping in mind the batting-friendly pitch in Mohali, which is all set to host the third Test of the four-match series against Australia from March 14.
"Sehwag has always performed better on pitches where ball carries nicely on the bat and Mohali is that kind of wicket which will surely assist his batting style. So, I think he could have been given a chance in Mohali for the third Test," Gavaskar said to NDTV on Thursday.
Adding to his point, he said "It doesn’t look to me as an end to his career for Sehwag because he started the season with a bang by getting a 100 but after that he has got out to some terrific bowling rather than playing some silly shots. I don't think he is totally out of form," Gavaskar told 'NDTV'.
Asked if Sehwag could be slotted in the middle-order in future, Gavaskar said, "With the experience that he carries, he would be a great asset while batting at number 5-6, especially in countering the second new ball and don’t forget that he started his career as a middle-order batsmen," quipped Gavaskar.
However, former Australia batsman, Dean Jones felt it would be difficult for Sehwag to make a comeback. "It's going to be difficult for him to make a comeback. I am starting to worry for him now and with the South Africa series coming up, it's not going to be easy."
Sehwag has been left out of the squad for the last two Test against Australia because of his bad run with the bat. He under performed in last five Tests after getting a hundred in the opening game of the home series against England at Ahmedabad in November-December last year. He was unable to score even a half-century in two home Tests against New Zealand.
