Eoin Morgan six of the last ball helped England beat India by six wickets in the second T20 international at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to square the two match series.
England requiring nine runs to win from the last over could manage only six runs from first five deliveries off Ashoke Dinda. India were looking set for a win considering the way Dinda was bowling but an attempted Yorker from him ended up as half volley and Morgan carted the ball straight past the sight screen to clinch a thriller.
The win not only helped England end the first end of the tour on a good note but also dashed India’s hope of becoming the number 1 ranked T20 side.
Asked to chase a stiff target of 178 England started off well but few quick wickets pegged them before some brave batting for the fifth wicket saw them through.
Earlier India who were asked to bat first did not have best of starts to their innings but few good innings took them to a formidable total.
Here are some of the hits and flops of the match:
England:
Hits:
Eoin Morgan: The skipper led from the front and it was his innings that helped England square the series. It was last ball heroics that took the match out of India’s clutches. Morgan came into bat at a crucial juncture of the match and played suiting the need of the hour. He avoided taking unnecessary risk and shaped his innings properly. He stayed unbeaten on 49 off 26 deliveries including five boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Michael Lumb: The opener gave just the right kind of start England needed to chase down this huge target. He took the attack to the Indian bowlers initially and never allowed to settle them in the match. He scored a brilliant 50 off 34 deliveries including six boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Alex Hales: Hales was dropped early on in the innings and he made proper use of it. He supported Lumb well at the top of the innings and scored 42 off 33 deliveries laced with four boundaries and a six.
Flops:
Stuart Meaker: Meaker was the receiving end of Indian batters wrath. He was taken to the cleaners and gave away too many runs much against the liking of the skipper. He took a wicket and gave away 42 runs off four overs.
India:
Virat Kohli: Virat Kohli showed why he is one of the most dangerous batsmen in the contemporary cricket. He came into bat after Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for cheap. He started off slowly but soon took the attack to the bowlers. He exhibited some ruthless hitting and score 38 off 20 balls including seven boundaries.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: That entire grudge Dhoni had against England, he chose to vent out in this match. The skipper came in at a time when India were looking at a total something around 150, but he changed the course of the match so soon. He delivered some lusty blows in his 18-ball innings. He scored 38 including three boundaries and two huge sixes.
Suresh Raina: Raina once again proved that he is such a revered player in T20 cricket. He chose to play the role of an anchor in the match. But that did not stop him scoring at a strike rate of 140+. He played 24 deliveries and scored 35 runs including three boundaries and a six.
Yuvraj Singh: After failing with the bat he chose to compensate with the ball. He was the most economical Indian bowler and did well to bowl at an average of 4.25 on a day when opposition batters were on rampage mode. He gave away just 17 runs in four overs and took three wickets.
Flops:
Ashoke Dinda: Being the strike bowler of the side, he was supposed to bowl with much more responsibility. He was hit at will by the English batters and it was in his last over that Morgan hit the winning six in the final ball. He gave away 44 runs in his quota of four overs and took a wicket.
Parvinder Awana: Awana continued his poor run from the last match and was woeful in the match both as a bowler and a fielder as well. He dropped the catch of all important Alex Hales and he made India pay for it heavily. And coming to his bowling, his wayward line and length saw him getting hit all over the park. He gave away 42 in four overs and remained wicketless.
