CSK vs Lions: Performances that made the difference

CSK vs Lions: Performances that made the differenceChennai Super King's hope of qualifying for the semifinals of the Champions League T20 recieved huge setback as they crashed to their second consecutive defeat of the tournament.

Chennai starting as one of the strong contenders of the tournament lost to the local favourites Highveld Lions by six wickets.

Put into bat first, Chennai Super Kings posted a total of 158-6 in their stipulated 20 overs and in reply the Lions reached the target with three balls to spare.

Lions made a shaky start but showed character to beat their fancied opponents.

It was a good match and there were some pretty good and some bad performances from both innings, let’s have a look at some of the hits and flops from both teams.

Chennai Super Kings
:

Hits
:

S Badrinath
: He came into bat in the 16th over and played a vital role for his team. Chennai needed some quick runs and Badrinath played against his nature and provided his team a much needed momentum in the end. He scored 27 runs of just 14 balls hitting two sixes.

Doug Bollinger:
He was ordinary against the Sydney Sixers but was right on the money in this match. He dismissed the dangerous Petersen with his first delivery and got Cock out in his second over.

Flops
:

Murali Vijay
: He scored 22 runs but never looked comfortable on the crease. He was swinging like a rusty gate and struggled to connect, he consumed 25 important deliveries and looked lost in the middle.

R Ashwin
: He was the best bowler in the side but he surely didn’t bowl like one. He bowled far too quickly and never gave ball a chance to spin. He was very defensive in his approach and was punished by the Lions batsmen. In his last over he bowled a no-ball which proved costly. His last ball went for a six which changed the complexion of
the match.

Albie Morkel
: Morkel was brought in the team in place of Michael Hussey but the move did not make any difference as Morkel failed with both bat and ball. He played a wild stroke to get out and leaked runs at 10 runs per over.

Lions:

Hits:

Aaron Phangiso:
After bowling a tremendous spell against Mumbai Indians, he was once again on the mark. He was the only spinner to extract some turn from the pitch. He gave away only 17 runs in his four overs and picked up important wickets of Vijay and Jadeja.

Gulam Bodi:
He struggled in the opening overs but flourished against the slow bowlers. Bodi’s innings gave the Lions team the confidence that they can chase the target. He provided the much needed momentum in the middle overs. He finished with 64 runs hitting four sixes and five fours.

Jean Symes
: He was brilliant on the field,  but his main contribution came with the bat. He scored an unbeaten 39 off just 23 balls and was there till the last run. He scored 10 runs that were needed in the final over in just the first three balls.

Flops:

Dirk Nannes
: Being the most experienced bowler in the line-up a lot depended on him, but he failed to deliver. He bowled waywardly and conceded to many run-scoring opportunities. He finished with the figures of 1-46 in his four overs.
