Bedi lambasts DDCA on Jimmy Amarnath issue

Bishen Singh BediNew Delhi: Former India captain and legendary spinner Bishen Singh Bedi on Friday lambasted Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) for not backing Mohinder Amarnath, who was removed from the post of selector just after his first season, saying that BCCI could not have done what they did to Jimmy Amarnath had the DDCA pulled their weight behind him.

“It is unfortunate that a guy of the character of Jimmy did not get support from DDCA. It would have been an honour for North Zone had Jimmy become the chairman of selectors. But instead he got the boot as some people had personal interests,” Bedi said during a media interaction at the Constitution Club on Friday.

Taking a dig at BCCI president N Srinivasan, without taking his name, Bedi said that in BCCI one guy was omnipresent and no one could challenge him. “This is not a good sign." he said.

Coming down harsh on DDCA sports secretary Sunil Dev, Bedi said that he was not doing enough at the BCCI AGM. “He has ruined Delhi cricket. The DDCA didn’t do what they should. BCCI could not have done what they did to Jimmy had DDCA pulled their weight behind him. It is unfortunate that a guy of the character of Jimmy did not get support from DDCA,” said Bedi.

Meanwhile former cricketer Kirti Azad furnished documents which showed that Sunil Dev had allegedly spent Rs 6 lakh for travelling expenses during the 2010-11 season. He said that the DDCA has around 1900 proxy members and 40 per cent of its staff is fake. He also said that all payments were done without taking permission from the Registrar of Companies (RoC).

Azad also went on to say that DDCA has no particular rules for tenders and no register for attendance. He, citing the example of the Dharamsala Stadium, also pointed out to major discrepancies in revamping of the Ferozeshah Shah Kotla stadium. He said that while the cost of building Dharamsala stadium was 20 cr, a whopping 100 cr were spent on the Delhi one.
