Women's national boxing gets underway from today

boxingNew Delhi: The dazzling damsels of the Indian boxing adorned their battle gear as they got onto the canvases of the national circuit at the 13th Senior Women’s National Boxing Championship, presented by Monnet Ispat and Energy Limited. The diverse city of Guwahati will play host to the Championship, which is being organised by the Assam State Amateur Boxing Association under the aegis of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation.

The premier event – a citadel of the nation's best women boxers – will witness over 175 boxers from 30 State and Board teams fight it out for the coveted national title in this edition, which is scheduled to be held from 25th November – 29th November, 2012. The Karambir Nabin Chandra Bardoloi Indoor Stadium located in the outskirts of the city will act as the venue for the five day affair.

Apart from providing an exceptional competitive platform, the championship will also act as selection ground to shortlist players constituting the core group for the National Camp, which acts as a finishing school and prepares the boxers for major international events. Coach in charge of the Indian Women’s boxing team Anoop Kumar, who is also a member of the selection committee, considers the tournament to be massive talent pool that determines the Indian challengers for the global arena.

He believes the championship this year will have an added sheen to it considering the successful inclusion of Women’s boxing at the Olympics and the significant impact of MC Mary Kom’s performance in London. “Mary’s performance at the London Games has given a new boost to Indian boxing, although she has won many world titles, but the Olympics brings in that extra bit. It’s what Vijender did in 2008 for the men’s discipline. Also this year we are bound to see some fresh faces and talent in the competition”, he said. 40 medals will be at stake in the contest and all 4 medal winners in each weight category will be guaranteed a spot at the national camp.
