High jumper Sarvesh Kushare, long jumper Ancy Sojan and squash players Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh won silver medals for India at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya. Harita Bhadra, Parul Chaudhary and Tejaswin Shankar added three bronze medals in athletics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all seven medallists on Sunday evening.

Kushare ends five-decade wait in high jump

Kushare’s silver in the men’s high jump is India’s first medal in the event at the Asian Games in five decades.

“A historic Silver for Sarvesh Kushare in the Men’s High Jump at the Asian Games! With a superb effort, he has ended India’s five-decade wait for a medal in this event. It is truly a memorable achievement powered by perseverance and determination,” the Prime Minister said.

Silver for Abhay and Anahat in squash singles

Both Indian squash players who reached the singles finals came away with silver. Anahat, the first Indian woman to play an Asian Games squash final, had faced Malaysia’s top seed Sivasangari Subramaniam for the women’s title. Second seed Abhay took silver in the men’s singles.

“A splendid Silver for Anahat Singh! Her performance in the Women’s Singles Squash at the Asian Games has been impressive. She has shown tremendous skill, notably while competing against some of the finest players,” Modi said.

He said Abhay’s “skill and determination have made India proud” and that the medal “reflects the hard work he has put in over the years”.

Anahat’s run to the final included a comeback from two games down against Japan’s Satomi Watanabe. Read our report on her semi-final.

Ancy Sojan silver, three bronzes on the track

Ancy Sojan won silver in the women’s long jump.

Harita Bhadra took bronze in the women’s 200m in her first Asian Games. “Making her Asian Games debut, she raced with confidence and determination to secure a well-deserved place on the podium,” the Prime Minister said.

Parul Chaudhary won bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

Tejaswin Shankar finished with bronze in the men’s decathlon after two days of competition. He had been second after the first two events. “Competing across demanding events over two days requires exceptional versatility, endurance and resolve,” Modi said.
