Pargat Singh was India’s best full-back of the late 1980s and 1990s, and the only Indian to captain the hockey team at two Olympic Games, Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996. He came from Mithapur near Jalandhar, joined Punjab Police, and after his playing days moved into sports administration and then politics.
Name: Pargat Singh

Sport: Hockey
Position: Full-back
Mithapur and Jalandhar
Pargat Singh was born on 5 March 1965 in Mithapur, a village in the Jalandhar district that has produced several international players. He played school and college hockey in Jalandhar and came into the national side in the mid-1980s. He was a calm, upright defender who read the game well, with a strong tackle and a long, accurate hit out of defence. He also took penalty corners.
Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta
His first Olympics were at Seoul in 1988, where India finished sixth. By the time of the 1992 Barcelona Games he was captain, and India finished seventh. He led the side again at Atlanta in 1996, where India came eighth.
Those were lean years for Indian hockey at the Olympics. The game had moved fully onto artificial turf, European and Australian teams had become fitter and more organised, and India was struggling to adapt. Pargat Singh was one of the few Indian players of that period regularly picked for world all-star sides.
Asian Games and other tournaments
He won Asian Games bronze in Seoul in 1986 and silver in Beijing in 1990 and Hiroshima in 1994. He also played at the World Cup and the Champions Trophy several times during a long international career.
Police, administration and politics
Pargat Singh served with Punjab Police and later became Director of Sports for the state of Punjab. In 2012 he entered politics and won the Jalandhar Cantonment seat in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He has held the seat since and served as Punjab’s sports and education minister in 2021.
He received the Arjuna Award in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 1998.
