Mumbai, November 5: The Shri Shashi Ruia Memorial Golf Championship, a new ₹2 crore event on the DP World PGTI, will be played at Willingdon Sports Club in Mumbai from January 12 to 15, 2027. A Pro-Am is scheduled for January 10.

The tournament comes a month after the ₹1 crore CIDCO Open, which will be held at Kharghar Valley Golf Course in Navi Mumbai from December 15 to 18, 2026. Between them, the two events will offer ₹3 crore in prize money to Indian professionals in the Mumbai region within a few weeks.

Annual event until 2031

The championship comes from a five-year agreement between the DP World PGTI and Essar Foundation and will be held every year until 2031. It is named after the late Shashi Ruia, who co-founded Essar with his brother Ravi and was a keen golfer. His son Prashant Ruia, Group Chief Executive of the Essar Group, recalled going to golf courses with his father and the pleasure the game gave him.

DP World PGTI President Kapil Dev spoke about the importance of such tournaments for young golfers, and pointed to Pranavi Urs’ Asian Games gold medal as an example that can inspire the next generation. Tour CEO Amandeep Johl said Mumbai and the surrounding region, out towards Lonavala and Pune, had strong potential for golf.

Professional golf returns to the city

Golf has been played in Mumbai since the 19th century, and Willingdon and the Bombay Presidency Golf Club are the city’s best-known clubs. The CG Open at Bombay Presidency was a regular stop on the tour for more than a decade from 2007.

The CIDCO Open returns for its second edition next month. Veer Ahlawat won the inaugural event in December 2025.

For players on the tour, the two events mean more starts, more chances to earn and more ranking points. Regular tournaments matter most for younger professionals who are trying to build a career and gain experience against established players.
