Mumbai, September 8: The Tata Mumbai Marathon’s 2026 edition generated ₹663.23 crore in economic, health and social impact, according to a report unveiled by Maharashtra deputy chief minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar in Mumbai.

The Tata Mumbai Marathon 2026 Socio-Economic and Health Impact Report was prepared by Procam International, which organises the marathon, together with the International Institute of Sports Management. It was released at Sahyadri Guest House in the presence of Pawar, Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal and officials from Procam and the Maharashtra Athletics Association.

The marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Race now in its 21st year, had 70,065 participants in 2026, drawn from 37 states and union territories and 46 countries. Women made up 27 per cent of the field, an 11.6 per cent rise on the previous year, and 60 per cent of runners were aged between 25 and 44.

Economic impact

The report put the direct economic impact at ₹602.54 crore, made up of ₹277.58 crore spent on health, nutrition and training, ₹120.76 crore on food, accommodation and local travel, ₹112.88 crore on shoes and apparel, and ₹87.79 crore on technology and equipment. Among local businesses surveyed, 64 per cent reported higher revenues and 67 per cent higher footfall during the marathon period.

Health and fundraising

Of the participants, 67 per cent said they had started running for their health, and 49 per cent reported weight loss. The event also raised ₹60.68 crore for charity in 2026, taking money raised across 21 editions past ₹500 crore, through more than 11,600 individual fundraising campaigns and 194 companies fielding 275 corporate teams.

The marathon’s Green Bib tree-planting initiative has raised ₹1.18 crore and supported the planting of more than 18,000 trees in Solapur, while organisers said the 2026 race processed all of its 21.8 tonnes of waste and avoided an estimated 49,147 kg of CO2 emissions.

Dream Run registrations open

Registrations for the 2027 Dream Run, the mass-participation event held alongside the marathon, opened on September 8 and close on September 13 or once places run out. Pawar registered for the Dream Run herself at the event.

“The impact of this marathon is not limited to the sporting arena alone,” Pawar said. “Because of this marathon, industries such as tourism, travel, fitness and sports have generated an estimated ₹650 crore in revenue.”

Procam International joint managing director Vivek Singh said the impact figure had grown from ₹202.78 crore in 2020 to ₹663.22 crore in 2026. The Tata Mumbai Marathon is sponsored by the Government of Maharashtra for the next five years.
