Amstelveen: England came from behind to beat India 4-2 in a crucial Pool D match at the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026, virtually assuring themselves of top spot in the group.
India led 2-1 at half-time after Harmanpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh helped them recover from an early deficit. But England took control after the break, scoring twice in the third quarter before adding another goal in the final period.
The defeat continued India’s 32-year wait for a World Cup victory over England. India remain second in the group with three points and now face a must-win match against Pakistan to guarantee their place in Round 2.
Nicholas Bandurak scored twice for England, while Rushmore and Henry Croft were also on target. Harmanpreet and Dilpreet scored India’s goals.
India fight back to take half-time lead
England made the stronger start and went 1-0 ahead, but India responded well as the first half progressed.
Harmanpreet brought India level before Dilpreet found the net to complete the turnaround and give India a 2-1 advantage going into the half-time break.
England, who finished second in the Pro League, raised their game considerably after the interval.
Rushmore, who caused India problems throughout the contest, and Croft scored in the third quarter as England overturned the deficit and moved 3-2 ahead.
India struggled to regain control after that. England continued to dictate the match and scored once more in the final quarter to complete a 4-2 victory.
The statistics reflected England’s advantage. They earned seven penalty corners compared to India’s three. Both teams converted one penalty corner, while England scored three field goals against India’s one.
India face crucial Pakistan match
The victory put England through to the next round and left them in a commanding position to finish top of Pool D.
India’s qualification hopes now depend heavily on their final pool match against Pakistan. A victory will guarantee their passage to Round 2.
A draw could also be enough, but only if Wales upset England in their next match.
India captain Harmanpreet admitted mistakes away from the ball had hurt his team and said the defeat would provide important lessons before the Pakistan game.
“Silly mistakes off the ball. Big learning for next match. This was an important match. We have one more match to go through to next pool. Ready for next match, good learnings from this one,” Harmanpreet said.
Asked about the pressure surrounding the Pakistan match, he said India would need to remain composed.
“Just a game for us. We need to play our game, focus and control our emotions.”
